Shamanic Journeying for Beginners

A tree and a portal in the Lower Shamanic Realm (non-ordinary reality)

shamanic journey is an active meditation, a disciplined method for entering an altered state of consciousness to access non-ordinary reality, or the spirit worlds. It is not passive daydreaming. This guide is a practical introduction for beginners, focused on the foundational journey to the Lower World to connect with a power animal.

Definition of a Shamanic Journey

A shamanic journey is the core technique of every shamanic practitioner. It is an intentional, structured trance state that allows the adept’s consciousness to travel from ordinary reality into the spiritual realms. The practitioner remains in full control, directing the journey with a clear purpose. This method is used to gain information, retrieve lost power, or facilitate healing by interacting directly with spirit allies.

How to Prepare for Your First Journey

Proper preparation is essential for a successful and safe shamanic practice.

Setting a Clear Intention

The intention is the most critical part of the journey. It is your steering wheel and your destination. A vague intention will lead to a vague and confusing journey. For a beginner, the intention must be simple, clear, and focused.

A perfect first intention is: “I intend to journey to the Lower World to meet a power animal for my highest good.”

Creating a Safe Space

You must be physically undisturbed for the duration of your journey, which is very individual and could range from 30 minutes to even a whole hour or longer. Practice in a quiet, dark, or dimly lit room. Lie down or sit in a comfortable position, uncross your arms and legs, and ensure you will not be interrupted by people, phones, or pets. Your body must feel completely safe to allow your consciousness to travel.

The Shamanic Drum (Sonic Driver)

The shamanic journey is powered by a sonic driver. This is a monotonous, repetitive sound, most commonly a shamanic drum or rattle, played at a steady tempo (typically 4-7 beats per second). This sound is not just music; it is a spiritual technology. It audibly shifts your brainwaves from the analytical Beta state into the deeper Theta state, which is the shamanic trance.

You do not need to own a drum. High-quality, long-duration “shamanic drumming” tracks are widely available online and are highly effective. Use headphones to block out external noise.

To prevent sensory distraction, use a blindfold or journey bandana to achieve total darkness, facilitating the shift from exteroception to interoception. The drum functions as a chronotropic anchor, preventing the consciousness from drifting into REM sleep or unstructured daydreaming.

The Journey to the Lower World

For your first journey, your destination is always the Lower World. This is a compassionate, natural realm, and it is the home of power animals.

Finding Your Axis Mundi (The Entrance)

You must begin your journey from a starting point in ordinary reality that you know well. This entrance must lead down into the earth. This is your Axis Mundi, or “World Axis.”

Choose a specific, natural place you can visualize clearly:

  • A particular cave you have visited.
  • A hollow stump or hole at the base of a large tree.
  • A natural spring, well, or whirlpool.

As a beginner, you will use this same entrance every time you travel to the Lower World and return through it to keep the practice consistent.

Traveling Through the Tunnel

Once you are comfortable with your intention set, start the drumming track. With your eyes closed, bring your Axis Mundi to mind. Move your consciousness into it. This will almost always open into a tunnel or passageway.

Your job is to “ride” the drumbeat down this tunnel. Do not try to force it or “invent” what you see. Simply maintain your intention and let the sound of the drum pull you along.

Finding Your Power Animal

The tunnel will eventually open up into a landscape. This is the Lower World.

How to Look for a Power Animal

Once you arrive in the Lower World (which will almost always be a natural landscape like a forest, jungle, or seaside), state your intention again, either mentally or aloud: “I ask for my power animal to show itself to me.”

How to Interact With the Power Animal

Be patient and observe. You are looking for an animal that acts in an unusual way. A random animal might just be part of the landscape. A power animal will make itself known. It might appear multiple times, make direct eye contact, or approach you.

You can ask it, “Are you my power animal?” The communication is rarely verbal; it is a telepathic “knowing” or feeling. This animal is your primary spiritual ally, providing you with power, protection, and wisdom.

The Return and Integration

The return signal creates a deliberate acoustic bridge: it typically begins with a distinct break in the steady trance rhythm to alert the psyche that the session is ending. This is followed by a transition phase (often an energetic tempo) to support the retraction of awareness from the non-ordinary landscape, and concludes with a final grounding sequence to firmly re-orient the adept to the physical locus.

The Call-Back Signal

Your drumming track will have a distinct change in rhythm at the end, often a series of rapid beats. This is the call-back signal. When you hear it, start preparing to return.

Grounding and Journaling

Thank your power animal and return the exact same way you came. Go back through the landscape, find your tunnel entrance, and travel up the tunnel. Feel your consciousness fully re-enter your physical body in the room.

Once you are “back,” sit up. Touch the floor, open your eyes, and drink some water. This is grounding.

Immediately—before you do anything else—write down everything you experienced in a journal. This act of integration is critical. It anchors the spiritual experience in ordinary reality and honors the gift of the journey.

Reciprocity and Ayni

Shamanic journeying is not a consumer transaction but a relationship based on Ayni (sacred reciprocity). Upon returning, perform a physical act of grateful displacement. This may include leaving an offering of tobacco or cornmeal in nature, or performing a specific action requested by the spirit. Failure to integrate the journey through physical praxis diminishes the transpersonal bond and the efficacy of future journeys.

FAQ: Beginner Questions and Pitfalls

What if I don’t see anything?

This is very common. Shamanic journeying is not just visual. Many people do not “see” a high-definition movie. You may feel sensations (like flying or warmth), hear sounds, or just have a strong knowing that something is happening. Do not discount a journey because it was not purely visual; your other senses may be stronger.

Am I just making this up?

This is the single most common obstacle for beginners. The line between active imagination and shamanic “seeing” is extremely fine. The answer is to disregard the question entirely. Suspend your disbelief during the practice. Treat the experience as if it is 100% real. The insights, healing, or wisdom you bring back will be your proof. As an adept, I can tell you that this doubt is the biggest hurdle; you must move past it with discipline.

Is this safe to do alone?

For a beginner journey with a clear, positive intention (like finding a power animal) to the Lower World, the risk is minimal. The Lower World is a compassionate realm, and your intention and the drumbeat create a protected space. The real dangers in shamanic work come from more advanced practices, like extraction or psychopomp work, which should never be attempted without proper training and strong spirit allies.
