How to Learn Reiki

Healing hand of a Reiki Master-Teacher

Learning to heal with Reiki is typically initiated through a direct energetic transmission from a qualified teacher. Unlike skills learned through study alone, the ability to channel Reiki energy must be practiced and mastered, typically under the guidance of the Reiki Master-Teacher who attunes their disciples and passes on their knowledge and skills.

The Role of a Reiki Master-Teacher

While the general principle of channeling divine energy can be explored independently through extensive personal practice, learning a specific, codified system like Usui Reiki Ryoho requires the guidance of a Reiki Master-Teacher. This is because the Master-Teacher is the custodian of that system’s specific energetic frequency and methodology, often referred to as Sensei in traditional contexts. They hold the key to the practice: the attunement, a process that energetically connects the student to the source of that particular Reiki lineage.

The Three Levels of Reiki

Within the traditional Usui Reiki Ryoho school, the learning path is structured into three progressive levels, or degrees. This classic structure provides a solid foundation, though it’s important to recognize that other modern Reiki systems may have their own unique methodologies and progressions.

  • Shoden (Level I): The novice undergoes initial Reiju to open the energetic pathway. The curriculum emphasizes physical self-treatment, the history of Mikao Usui, and the foundational hand positions.
  • Okuden (Level II): The practitioner receives three symbols (Shirushi) and their corresponding mantras (Jumon). Focus shifts to mental-emotional restructuring and non-local (distance) transmission.
  • Shinpiden (Level III/Master): The initiate receives the Dai Ko Myo master symbol. This level is less about technique and more about spiritual self-realization (Anshin Ritsumei) and acquiring the technical ability to attune others.

The Mechanics of Attunement

The attunement (or Reiju in Japanese) is the pivot point of Reiki education. It is not merely a ritual but a bio-energetic surgery performed by the Master-Teacher. During this process, the teacher stimulates the student’s Crown Chakra, unblocks the central energy channel (Sushumna), and anchors the specific vibrational frequency of the lineage into the student’s subtle body. This permanent alteration expands the caliber of the student’s electromagnetic field, allowing them to conduit high-frequency Ki without depletion. While controversy exists regarding the efficacy of remote transmission versus tactile induction, the intent irrevocably remains to open the initiate to the Universal Source.

The 21-Day Cleansing Cycle

Following a Level I Reiki attunement, practitioners typically undergo a 21-day period of energetic integration and biochemical detoxification. This cycle is modeled after Mikao Usui’s 21 days of fasting on Mount Kurama and serves to stabilize the initiate’s new vibrational frequency.

During this transition, the body’s comprehensive anatomy—including the Aura, Chakras, and Seika Tanden—undergoes a process of purification. As the internal “voltage” increases, the system naturally expels Byosen (stagnant energy). This purge can manifest as a “healing crisis,” where physical toxins, repressed emotions, or outdated mental patterns surface to be released.

To navigate this cycle effectively, practitioners prioritize daily self-Reiki and grounding techniques like Hatsurei Ho. This consistent application helps clear the Keiraku (meridians), ensuring that the increased flow of universal life force becomes a permanent, balanced baseline for the practitioner’s physical and spiritual health.

Choosing Your Teacher

When seeking to become a certified master or respected practitioner of a traditional school like Usui Reiki Ryoho, the teacher’s lineage, documented via a physical lineage chart, serves as a crucial confirmation of their qualifications. A verifiable lineage tracing directly back to the founder, Mikao Usui, ensures that the teachings and attunements you receive are authentic to that specific system. Beyond credentials, however, the choice is deeply personal. You should find a teacher whose philosophy resonates with you and with whom you feel a sense of trust and connection.

As a Reiki Master-Teacher in multiple systems, I offer remote Reiki teachings via video consultation and distant Reiki attunements, allowing students to receive a direct transmission and one-on-one guidance in an authentic lineage, regardless of their location.

Practice After Attunement

Receiving an attunement is the beginning of the journey, not the end. The real learning and mastery happen through consistent self-practice. Daily self-Reiki sessions and practicing the Gokai (Five Precepts) are essential for deepening your sensitivity to the energy, building confidence, and continuing your own healing process. As practitioners of any system become more experienced and their intuition develops, they often find they are guided to work with energy in new ways. It is common for advanced Master-Teachers to be inspired to discover their own unique modalities, energies, or even create new healing techniques and symbols.

Fundamental Cultivation Techniques

Learning Reiki extends beyond passive channeling; it requires active cultivation of the energetic vessel. Essential disciplines include Hatsurei Ho (a method for generating stronger spirit/energy), Gassho Meiso (meditation with palms pressed together to quiet the mind), and Kenyoku Ho (dry bathing). These techniques clear the practitioner’s meridians of energetic debris before and after treatments, preventing the absorption of discordant energy from clients (byosen).
