Kundalini Reiki is a modern, specific modality of energy healing that is distinct from traditional Usui Reiki. While both systems use “Reiki” or universal life force energy, Kundalini Reiki’s primary purpose is to work directly with the “Kundalini” energy—a dormant, primal force coiled at the base of the spine—to promote a safe and gradual spiritual awakening.
It is a path of energetic purification and activation. As a Kundalini Reiki Master since 2007, I can attest that its goal is not to grant “mystical superpowers,” but to trigger a long-term process of spiritual awakening that restores balance to the chakras and deeply sensitizes the practitioner to healing frequencies.
What Is Kundalini Reiki
To understand Kundalini Reiki, one must first understand the two types of energy it works with.
- Universal Energy (Reiki/Ki): This is the “traditional” Reiki energy. It is often described as a “divine masculine” energy that flows down from the universe, through the practitioner’s crown, and out through their hands. It is gentle, balancing, and cooling.
- Kundalini Energy (Shakti): This is the “divine feminine” energy, a raw, powerful, and primal force of creation. In yogic and Hindu traditions, it is visualized as a “coiled serpent” lying dormant at the root chakra (the base of the spine). This is an “earth” energy that, when awakened, rises up the central energy channel (Sushumna).
The Kundalini Reiki system, which was channeled by Danish meditation master Ole Gabrielsen, is a direct and specific modality designed to safely awaken this Kundalini energy and manage its upward flow, clearing the chakras from the root to the crown.
Reiki and Kundalini: The Relationship
Traditional Usui Reiki and Kundalini Reiki are not in conflict; they are two sides of the same coin, often described as the “house-cleaning” and the “activation.”
How Usui Reiki Prepares the Path
Think of traditional Usui Reiki as a team of gentle house cleaners. A standard Reiki session patiently and methodically moves through the body’s energy system, clearing blockages, releasing emotional stagnation, and restoring balance to each individual chakra. It is a slow, gentle, and nurturing process that prepares the body’s energetic “wiring” (the nadis or energy channels) to be able to handle a higher vibrational load.
How Kundalini Reiki Activates the Path
Kundalini Reiki is the electrician who goes straight to the main fuse box. It is a more direct, intense, and fiery system. Its specific attunements are designed to “flip the switch,” stimulating the dormant Kundalini energy at the root and encouraging its ascent up the central channel. It is somewhat a “fast track”, but one that relies on the “house” being relatively clean to avoid “short circuits.”
Does Kundalini Reiki Awaken Kundalini
The Kundalini Reiki attunement process is specifically designed to facilitate a safe, gradual, and controlled Kundalini awakening. It is typically done in three stages:
- Kundalini Reiki 1: The main healing channels are opened and cleared, preparing the body for the awakening. The hand chakras are opened, and the practitioner learns to channel Kundalini Reiki.
- Kundalini Reiki 2: The attunement is strengthened. The Kundalini energy is “ignited” and rises to the solar plexus chakra, beginning the “Kundalini fire” or “awakening” in a gentle, controlled manner.
- Kundalini Reiki 3 (Master/Teacher): The previous attunements are strengthened, and the Kundalini fire is fully raised, moving up to and out of the crown chakra. The practitioner is given the attunements to pass this system on to others.
Apart from 3 standard levels, KR “boosters” were also introduced, but as of now, Ole Gabrielsen attunes to the Kundalini Reiki system in a single attunement (Kundalini Reiki Ultimate).
Can a Simple Reiki Session Awaken Kundalini
No. This is a common fear, but one that is unfounded. A standard, traditional Usui Reiki session cannot cause a spontaneous Kundalini awakening; and neither can a casual Kundalini Reiki session.
The purpose of Reiki is balance, harmony, and gentle healing. It is a “cool” frequency. A Kundalini awakening is a “fiery,” transformative event. A simple Reiki session will cleanse the energy channels, which is a vital prerequisite for any spiritual awakening, but it does not provide the specific “spark” of activation. It makes the journey safer but does not force it to begin.
The True Goal: Spiritual Equilibrium, Not Superpowers
Many people are drawn to Kundalini with the expectation of gaining mystical superpowers or siddhis—such as levitation or telepathy. This is a fundamental misunderstanding of the process, one that is often driven by the ego.
As a Kundalini Reiki Master-Teacher since 2007, my own journey is a clear example. I experienced a full, spontaneous Kundalini awakening before I was ever attuned to the Kundalini Reiki system. For me, the formal KR attunement was simply a formality; it was a system that provided a name and structure to what my body was already experiencing.
Based on this experience, I can state with certainty: Kundalini does not give you any superpowers.
It is “merely” a very lengthy and often challenging process of spiritual awakening and purification. The true “gifts” of a Kundalini awakening are not external spectacle, but deep, internal shifts:
- It massively sensitizes and attunes you to healing frequencies.
- It allows you to sense and perceive energy much more clearly.
- It forces a clearing of old traumas and restores a deep and lasting balance within your soul and your chakras (this process might be very challenging both psychologically and physically; think of it as your nervous system recalibrating to find a new balance).
The purpose of Kundalini is not to make you “supernatural”; it is to make you “fully human” and “fully divine” by clearing all that is not “you.” It is the path to achieving true spiritual equilibrium. This is the grounded, authentic foundation of the work I do in my private Reiki sessions and the core principle I pass on in my Kundalini Reiki attunements.
